* MYRA BAZELL: MODERN DANCE
Myra Bazell has been performing and creating dance works nationally and abroad for fifteen years. Her solo works, teaching, and performing (with companies such as Group Motion Movement Theatre, Karen Bamonte Dance Works, The Waves Concert Jazz Company, and Ballet des Jeunes) have taken her on tour through Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Myra received a BFA from The University of the Arts, and is now on staff there teaching movement theater. Since its inception in 1994, Myra has been co-director and choreographer for SCRAP Performance Group, a Philadelphia based dance theater collective.
* TOMÁS DURA: FLAMENCO DANCE
Tomàs Dura has been performing and teaching Flamenco Dance throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. He has collaborated with such notable artists as Jose Greco Company, Flamenco Ole, Kei Takei's Moving Earth and Wilma Theater.
* MANFRED FISCHBECK: MODERN DANCE, IMPROVISATION
Manfred Fischbeck is the Artistic and Executive Director of Group Motion Dance Company, in addition to his many roles as choreographer, composer and teacher. Fischbeck has been a vital part of Philadelphia arts community for over three decades, performing, touring and teaching locally, nationally and internationally. Presently he serves on the faculty of the University of the Arts as Adjunct Professor in the School of Dance.
* SIFU HERB: SHEN QIGONG
Dr. Herbert L. Coverdale, a Qigong master, has more than 25 years experience as a therapist, a healer and practitioner of Traditional Medicine ( TCM ). He specializes in Psychoneurimmunology-directing the mind to strengthen, heal and protect the body and spirit. Using Taiji-like slow movement, relaxation, guided-imagery, and meditation, a primary objective is to strengthen the immune system. Dr. Coverdale prefers small classes which allow him to focus on the needs of each student.
* EMILY HUBLER: MODERN DANCE
This class draws on a mix of Modern Dance techniques, including the tradition of Martha Graham and Paul Taylor schools. Emily Hubler attended Interlochen Arts Academy and received BFA in dance from University of Arts, Philadelphia. She has danced with Scrap Performance Group, Ausdruckstanz Dance Theater, Moxie and the Bald Mermaids before she joined Group Motion Dance Company in 1999.
*MONCELL DURDEN:
No Jazz or Pop, just real house and hip hop taught by Moncell Durden. The class is a basic understanding of funk & hip hop movement & history, concentrating on popping, locking, basic boogaloo, hip hop social, freestyle & house.
* SHOJI OKUTANI (Sensei): KENDO (Japanese Martial Art)
Kendo literally means "the way of the sword" in Japanese. It refers to the traditional Japanese fencing that was originally developed and practiced by Japanese Samurai. Kendo originated from the various sword fighting techniques of hundreds of years of combat and study. It deals with the physical and mental skills necessary for sword fighting. The goal of Kendo is not only to develop the physical capability for fighting but also the moral and spiritual aspects that may be applied in coping with real life. Sensei Shoji Okutani has been practicing and teaching Kendo for the past 28 years. He is the rank Rokudan (6th dan) AJKF. Here is the Tan Shin Kai Kendo website.
* DIJIAN TIE
Djian Tie is an extraordinary theatrical presence. In addition to being steeped from the tender age of 8 in the revered traditional dance and music of his Gourou People of the Ivory Coast; Djian Tie is well versed in the traditional Dances of the entire West Coast of Africa, modern, jazz, soca, contemporary, aerobics, and hip-hop. He may surprise you with a little flamenco or even break dancing. Djian Tie considers himself primarily a dancer and choreographer, to that end he is also an expert percussionist and singer as is essential in professional African performance. Djian Tie' s choreographed pieces incorporate elements of global dance flavored and punctuated with pure unadulterated folkloric West African movements. DjianTie's original dance dramas include the inventive use of modern props and themes. Djian Tie is renown for his precision, speed, grace, fluidity, inventiveness, and mastery of various genres, memorable costuming and power. Djian Tie has electrified audiences all over the globe with his mesmerizing movements, precision percussion and dramatic presentations for over 20 years. Now, the Delaware Valley and environs has the opportunity to ride the crest of the World Dance and Music wave with Djian Tie.
* RON WOOD: CAPOEIRA (Brazilian Martial Art)
Capoeira is a danced fight, a playful sparring that incorporates flexibility, spirituality, and cunning. It is a martial art from Brazil deeply rooted in African tradition and orally handed down from teacher to student. Ron Wood (Professor Pardal) has been involved in the martial arts since 1985 and in Capoeira since 1994. He is taught by Mestre Doutor and a member of ASCAB capoeira. Pardal is also a member of the Philadelphia based Hip Hop company Rennie Harris Puremovement and recently formed his own company Zen One Dance, which fuses both hip hop and Capoeira.
* RAPHAEL XAVIER: BREAKIN
Raphael Xavier teaches beginner Breaking classes. Learn the foundation of this exciting dance form and its creative process. Jam session follows after the class. Raphael Xavier has been a member of Rennie Harris' Puremovement and toured with them since 1998. He has taught and toured nationally and internationally both as a member of Puremovement and as a soloist.
* LESYA POPIL
Company class is taught by company member, Lesya Popil who has trained at Ballet Theatre of Scranton, Paul Taylor School, Harvard Summer School and received her BFA from the University of the Arts in 2000 where she was awarded outstanding modern dancer and choreographer. She has taught ballet, jazz and modern to students at Ballet Theatre of Scranton, Marywood College and in arts programs such as Arts Live and ArtSave funded by the PA Council on the Arts. She has recently taught in Tunisia, Africa with Ruth Andrien of Paul Taylor Company and Bytom, Poland with Group Motion.
